Mapvision core technology receives US patent – investments into the future are growing

Mapvision, a leading in-line inspection company based in Helsinki Finland, has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent – U.S. Patent No. 10,012,500 – relates to the Mapvision measurement technology, and in particular to measuring objects by means of machine vision systems.

The underlying invention is a method for conducting new measurements from previously measured objects without a new physical measurement event. This is achieved by storing the measurement results of Mapvision machine vision system together with corresponding calibration data. When the calibration data is known, new measurements can be conducted later from the recorded images at a time when the actual object has already been supplied and possibly placed in an end product.

This capability of is of utmost importance and value in the automotive industry where component failures have been suspected for severe safety risks and dangers resulting in highly expensive service or even recall campaigns. By retrospective confirmatory quality control, the automotive OEMs and their tier 1 suppliers can not only validate the potential quality issue but also limit the corrective actions very precisely. All this will ultimately lead to lower costs, higher customer satisfaction and less damage to brand reputation.

“We are happy to receive a positive outcome from this patent process and application in the U.S. With this addition, our patent portfolio now comprises of 32 patents in different key geographical areas, such as US, UK, Japan and Germany. There are several patent application filing processes on-going for Mapvision technology, and we continue to implement our plan with the aim to achieve the best possible patent protection for our inventions”, comments Mr. Esa Leikas, Senior Research Fellow of Mapvision.

Robert Blumberg, CEO of Mapvision continues: “R&D and new technologies are at the heart of Mapvision. Having our roots and heritage in the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) and Helsinki University of Technology, innovation and continuous search for improvements are the core of our company culture. We have invested significantly into research and new product development, and we aim to do so even more in the future. In 2019-2020, our development efforts will be further accelerated after signing the 1.4 MEUR financing agreement with Business Finland. We are, for example, working relentlessly on weld seam inspection technology which holds great potential in meeting the needs of our customers”.
